In June 2025, Lusamerica met with staff from various West Coast congressional offices expressing our desire for America to grow its aquaculture industry.

Lusamerica is an active member with the Coalition for Sustainable Aquaculture (CSA), a group of award-winning chefs, environmentalists, researchers, and seafood companies who are highlighting how the United States is far behind when it comes to aquaculture, and believe we have an opportunity to grow the industry responsibly. We want to grow it here and do it right.

As a company, we are proud to partner directly with West Coast fishermen to source local seafood. These fishermen work hard to abide by very strict and complex regulations. The United States has some of the best fishery’s management in the world but, as a country, we are extremely behind when it comes to aquaculture (farmed seafood). We want to see a federal framework that supports the growth of aquaculture, but in a responsible way. By funding research and enacting policies focused on spurring economic opportunity and minimizing environmental risk, Congress could help inform strong science-based standards to scale domestic aquaculture and bolster American seafood competitiveness.
Up to 90% of the seafood we eat in the United States is imported, coming from countries that may not have much government oversite of how our seafood is farmed. We want to work to reduce our reliance on imported seafood. And today, over half of that comes from aquaculture. We believe the U.S. can do more to grow seafood here and do it right.

By funding research and enacting policies focused on spurring economic opportunity and minimizing environmental risk, Congress could help inform strong science-based standards to scale domestic aquaculture and bolster American seafood competitiveness.

It’s rare that we as a country can shape the future of a new food system, and Lusamerica is playing its part to shape it for the better. #GrowItHereDoItRight
