On Thursday November 6th, 2025. Lusamerica hosted 28 high-school students for a dock tour in Monterey California’s Moss-Landing Harbor as a part of a student leadership program called FARMS (Farming, Agriculture, and Resource Management for Sustainability), a program developed by the Center for Land-Based Learning and made for students across California. This tour provided kids with the opportunity to learn more about the seafood industry and participate in a fun fish identification exercise.

What Happened on This Fun-Filled Day?

During this field day, students, and Lusamerica staff met up at Moss Landing Harbor to begin an eventful tour day. Students began with a lecutre on the Lusamerica company and our west coast franchise to learn more about our involvement at this harbor. walk around Lusamericas section of this harbor, learning about how local fisheries like ours benefit from these well-ran harbors. Furthermore, students had the opportunity of participating in a fish-identification exercise and lecture. We hope these activities helped strengthen these students’ passions. Shout out to York High School, Watsonville High School, Diamond Technology Institute and Everett Alvarez High School for making this day a success.

What is FARMS?

Founded in 1993 in Woodland CA, The Center for Land-Based Learning is a non-profit organization made with the hope to connect students to real-world sciences, and careers. FARMS is a part of The Center for Land-Based Learning that spans throughout California. This program provides high-school students with information about a variety of career-pathways that may inspire them. These pathways could be anything from Agriculture to Environmental Science. In 2024-2025, FARMS hosted over 32 schools, and 260 students in total. In addition, these students had the opportunity to participate in 82 field days, with ours being one of many to come for the 2025-2026 season!

“At its core, the FARMS Program is about more than agriculture or environmental science. It’s about giving young people, many of whom have never set foot on a farm, the tools, exposure, and confidence to envision a future in which they are leaders, innovators, and caretakers of the land and their community.” – Mindy Cunha, FARMS Program Manager

Lisandra Lopez is a FARMS student participant who has found the program to be inspiring and insightful, when asked about this program, she states,

“FARMS has shown me that it does not matter how long it takes for you to reach your end goal, as long as you reach it. Being able to hear speakers from our FARMS days explain how many obstacles they went through is what has motivated me to keep going every day, because we all struggle, we all face challenges, but we need to learn to never give up and just keep walking with our heads up.”
